H Mart - Restaurant Review

Some of you may know that there is a new Korean Market in town. It's called H Mart and is located on Hwy 99 in Tigard, where the Haggen used to be.

If you have not ventured into H Mart yet, I advise that you do this on a weekday during the lunch hour or perhaps into the late evening when it is near closing time.
When you go there, you will be overwhelmed with Korean food (and other asian food, although it is primarily Korean). You will find items that range from yummy sweet cakes to frozen dried squid, your pick. You will also find that they have a hot food/deli section.

This hot food/deli section is open for lunch and dinner. They have a variety of traditional Korean meals, but I must say, not for very cheap. I thought the menu was a tad bit overpriced. You can find the traditional bibim pap (rice in a bowl with spicy red paste, vegetables, meat, and an egg), spicy squid with rice (cooked squid with vegetables in a spicy red sauce), kalbi-tang soup (beef stock soup), jja jang myun (noodles with brown bean paste, meat, and vegetables), to the more common fried rice, sweet and sour, hot wings, to the Japanese influenced sushi.

I went with a group of coworkers and I'm proud to say that we all got something different. Most liked what they got and some weren't that impressed. Myself being one. I got the jja jang myun and thought that it was bland. the noodles were too clumped together and the sauce didn't have that much flavor to it and was kind of liquidy, rather than thick, like I am used to. The sauce only had onions and meat as well. I'm used to sauce with potatoes, meat, onions, cucumbers, cabbage, etc..something a little more hearty.

My coworkers got mabo tofu (spicy tofu - she didn't get it that spicy and it ended up being pretty bland), chicken fried rice, sashimi salad, and spicy squid.

I may venture to H Mart again for lunch, but it will probably be a while. I think that I will stick to grocery shopping there and purchase some frozen dried squid instead.

Cha-ching!!!

So we got notice yesterday that daycare will be increasing their rates come September 1. Ugh!

The Bee Movie - A Review

So Bill rented "The Bee Movie" for Jae to watch and I believe they watched most of it, but I don't think that Jae would consider this movie to be in the same class distinction as the movie "Cars" - now that is an awesome movie.

Anyway, so I just wanted to say that I would give this movie 2.5 stars out of 5. The only good thing about this movie was Jerry Seinfeld and his one-liners. The animation wasn't that great (well, when you compare it to a Cars, A Bugs Life, etc) and the characters weren't that interesting.

Dr. Jekyll and Miss Hyde

My previous post talked about the crazy side of Hannah. Well, this post is about the cute, lovable side of Hannah.

How cute is she? It's moments like this that I will forget about what happened on Thursday = Screech!

Brewfest 2008

The quest for the holy spot began at 10 am on this glorious July 26th Saturday morning. Every year we set off on a quest for this spot under a tree that my dad likes. It really is a great spot that hides you from the hot sun or rain (this is Oregon). Out of all the years we've gone to this fest, we've only missed out on this spot once. This year, we got there so darn early that Stacey, Jake and I walked right in with the rest of the volunteer staff while Barb and her friend Cathie waited at the front gate. So once Barb and Cathie got in legally, we all went back out to get our wristbands.

This year's brewfest programs finally were well organized and they listed which trailer had which beer. It only took 21 years but they finally got it right. Got my first beer, Dragon's Milk, and sat down and checked off all the beers I wanted to try. I was very aggressive in the number of beers I wanted to try but, at this point in the day I had hope.

Barb's friend Cathie, Josh Pollinger and Patty the Pollinger cousin all came to visit from California to attend the brewfest with us. Its always nice to have visitors and we all had a great time.
This year the brewfest got busy so fast. On a typical year when the drunken cheers start we know its almost time to go. This year the cheers started only an hour into the fest. And the long lines that come with the drunken cheers also came early making it hard to taste all the beer you wanted. All in all, it was a great year and my favorite beers were the Dragon's Milk and Widmer's Full Nelson. The full nelson was my last beer and I discovered it had a 10% alcohol content. It wiped me out by that point in the day. Really wanted to try Rogue's beer Glen but, didn't get to it. There's always next year.

After the brewfest we headed to my sister Stacey's place for a barbecue and also to celebrate Anna Pollinger's 33rd birthday. All sorts of people were there and a good time was had by all. I learned that my sister's friend Seth is the son of a guy I've worked with at Rockwell for years. What a small world.

We all had a great time but, the busyness of this years brewfest has us all wondering if we want to keep going. Not sure if that makes us old or is just wise?

Screech..Part II

Sooo...I'm heading home tonight and who does the same thing??

Typical, she fell asleep for the first 30 minutes and then woke up. I stopped at a gas station and was there for 30 min, doing the whole rigamarole and nothing. So I get on the road, just as I see a vagrant walking around the parking lot!

So I told myself that I was going to drive for 20 minutes (regardless of crying) and if she was still crying after the 20 minutes that I would stop, and of course keep going if she was asleep.

She cried the whole 20 minutes and as I was getting ready to pull off at the next best exit, I heard quiet. She had fallen asleep.

She slept the whole way home, during transport to her bed, and she should sleep through the night.

Here's to a good night!

Screech!

I was heading up to my parents' house on Thursday evening with Hannah in tow. Normally, she's pretty good about hanging out with me when driving up to Olympia, but Thursday night I saw another side to little Miss Hannah.

The first 30 minutes were typical. She fell asleep as I sat through the Portland traffic heading northbound. However, 10 minutes into Washington, she wakes up and starts screaming! At first I thought it would subside, but as I kept driving, she kept screaming. So I stopped at a gas station to comfort her and put her back in her seat so we can keep going. The moment I get on the freeway, the screaming starts again. I drive for 10 minutes more and pull off the freeway again. This time we spend like 20 minutes parked at a gas station. I change her diaper, I feed her, I pat her, I walk her around outside (thank goodness for summer light), and she seems pretty happy. So we are on our way and as I pass an exit on the freeway, she starts screaming again. By this time I've got Bill on the phone and I'm asking him if I should turn back around and go home or keep stopping and head up to my parents, because my level of patience was wearing VERY thin at this point..all of this while parked on an offramp with my hazards on..alone with a baby.

I end up staying on the side of the road on this offramp for 30 minutes trying to soothe this crying baby. She ends up spitting up all over herself from the crying, so I have to change her clothes. I decide to give her some tylenol to calm her down and within 10 minutes she was asleep. By this time, it's dark! The sun has set and I'm still parked on the side of the road with my hazards. I was praying that no one would stop by and knock on the window b/c I would have freaked!

Needless to say, she stayed asleep the rest of the way to the parents. And I'm sure come morning, she had no recollection of it at all.

SOOOOOO..

Fourth of July

I know, a little late in the post, but I was looking at some pictures and wanted to post some of Jae with sparklers and fireworks.

We spent the evening with some friends and their kids and I think that Jae had a blast, literally!

I bundle up my kids real good!

Here's Spidey...

Move over Tobey Maguire, there's a new Spiderman in town...

Jae had face painting day at school and he wanted to be Spiderman! Needless to say, Bill and I were surprised when we picked him up. Surprise! But he enjoyed it and tried to keep his face clean all night, until bath time.

Here he is rescuing Hannah!

Live from Urgent Care

We took dad to urgent care today because he's been having some chest pains/discomfort. Jake and I witnessed it firsthand this morning at breakfast. Stacey and parents are in with the doctor now.

Fruit Loops

Jae wanted to put a picture of him eating cereal on here too..

Rice, rice baby!

Hannah has started eating rice cereal. We actually started her earlier this month, but finally got around to posting a pic. She's been eating while sitting in the bumbo because we haven't fished her highchair out of the garage just yet (if you've seen our garage, you would know what I'm talking about).

She's been enjoying it for the most part. Next is oatmeal, yum-o...

Jae is a big boy!

My baby is growing up. Lately, he has been telling Bill and I that we can't be in the bathroom when he goes pee because he can "do it by himself". Makes me sad to think that he's growing so fast before my eyes, but at the same time, I love the fact that he's being independent.

He used the potty today and went poop and pee all by himself..of course he calls us to help him wipe though. LOL!

Reading is fundamental...

I love reading with Daddy!

I Was the Cutest Kid on Tearose Way Until ...

I Was the Cutest Kid on Tearose Way Until I abused the nice Prayons that Aunt Anna gave me and then colored (red) all over our nice light beige carpets (2 days after they got their annual cleaning). Then my parents got mad at me and made me sit in the corner until they were done cleaning up my mess. I got no treats or fun stuff for the rest of the day and promised never to draw on anything but paper, unless mom and dad say its ok.

I awoke the next morning and asked mommy, "Where did all the red go?"
-- Jae William --

Its very hard to gauge what a 3 year old takes in but, he knew he was in trouble when I walked in the front door and caught him red handed (literally). He had a look of shame on his face. We hope very much he has learned his lesson and will not decorate our house any further but, only time will tell.

The Cutest Kid on Tearose Way

I love it when Jae wears his Thomas the Train hat.

Styring Vineyards 2006 Element 29 Pinot Gris

Purchased this bottle on a wine tasting trip for Jake's birthday. This is the place that supposedly had a cave under the tasting room. I don't think it exists and they were trying to lure tasters to the cave but them trick them into buying wine.

Anyway this pinot gris seems to be sweeter and less dry than most. No wonder it is liked by my family.

Seems to go with most anything. Good hot weather wine.

Chateau Ste Michelle 2007 Columbia Valley Riesling

I had the displeasure of tasting this wine with dinner at my house with Barb and Jake.

Had quite a funny taste to it that none of us liked.

Mental note not to purchase this one in the future.

Rebuilt My Deck

I had ripped out all our neglected deck boards last week. I had replacement lumber delivered from Parr Lumber. 20 ft length lumber so our deck has no seams now. Brother-in-laws Jake and Eric came by around 9am on Saturday to help with the replacement. Took us 3 hours to do all cuts, dry fit all boards and screw down the first 14 boards. After a lunch break at Quizno's, Eric had to leave for work. That left Jake and I to finish the remaining boards. It was alot of screws (10 lbs) to put down and the 20 ft boards were hard to work with because of their bowing. I think Jake was on the verge of passing out so we just tacked down the last 5 or 6 boards and called it a night. I woke up Sunday and trimmed the joists so the last board would hang over the skirting a bit and hide any of my mistakes. Eventually, we'll have to build a couple of steps. We like the look of the deck without rails but we keep getting strange looks and whatnot. City of Tigard code states that decks under 30" of height do not require hand rails. My neighbor, Doug, might get rid of his deck and if his bench/rails fit my deck, we might use those.

Lavender Festival

Barb, Jae, Hannah, and I went to the Lavender Festival today. It was a HOT day to be traipsing about the hillsides, but the lavender was in full bloom and the air smelled wonderful. Jae even drank some lavender lemonade!

We picked a bunch of lavender and I bought a couple of plants for the house..although, now I'm having second thoughts - Bees!

Jae and Auntie Barb

Jae and Barb picking lavender

Jae with lavender that he picked

Hannah being a good sport..it was a bumpy ride for her in the stroller. She was a trooper.

Gremlins 4???

Apparently there was a Gremlins 3 that went straight to dvd..who would have thought?

Hannah has always had crazy hair..we think that she could star in the next Gremlins movie if they were to ever make one..Do you think she'd make a cute Gizmo?

Another HOT Day...

It's another scorcher in the City of Roses...We are heading to the Grunwald Units to get some relief from this heat. I have to say that we will be getting a/c at the end of the month..hallelujah!

Jae and Hannah

I could not have asked for two kids to love each other more than Jae and Hannah love each other.

Jae cannot get enough of Hannah and is constantly having to touch her face, hair, and hands, and whenever Hannah is laying on the floor or on the bed, he's the first to lay down next to her. Jae likes to repeat Hannah's name over and over and it's just so sweet. I love it when he repeats what I say and calls her "Hannah bear" or says "I love you Hannah" or "It's okay sweetie", it makes my heart melt.

I know that Hannah feels the same way about Jae. Whenever he's around, she always has a smile on her face and moves with such delight. She loves watching him move around the living room and jump up and down and talk. I can't wait for the day that they do that together..

I will hold onto these dear memories as long as I can because I know one of these days..kids will be kids.

The Heat...

The heat has been BRUTAL..okay, so not "brutal", but for those that know me..it's been brutal. Anything over 76 degrees is pretty brutal for me.

So the house currently does not have central a/c (what were we thinking 5 years ago when we bought this place), we only have a portable unit in our bedroom, which means that all four of us sleep in there. And let's just say that 4 is a crowd..namely mama is a crowd. I totally gets the shaft. A couple of nights ago, I was at the foot of the bed while the kids and Bill had pillows!

Thank goodness we have seen the light and are getting estimates to have a/c put into the house..here's to a happy mama and a cool house.

This is a pic of kids taking over our bed. Bill and I may have to squeeze into Jae's twin bed.
